Foreigner

Foreigner is a 1,9m long mask made in felt in 2018. This interactive piece invites the viewer to transform their appearance and morph into a fantastical creature inspired by folklore and Fantasy. The mask has a special significance in cultures across the world, as it has been used in rituals and performances to convey a sense of theatricality and withdrawal from mundane life. In this context the mask turns into an item for play and experimentation that can open minds to possible bodies and imagined life forms as represented through this queer monster. The colors and expression of the mask are provocative and in-your-face in order to mirror the clash experienced by people leading alternative lifestyles (LGBT people in particular) when facing the world. Simultaneously the piece questions the absurdity of identity by distorting the human shape into an unspecified nonentity.
